Texas Raises Speed Limit To 85, Becomes The New Montana

Welcome to Texas

Welcome to Texas

When the 55 mile per hour national speed limit was repealed in 1987, states were once again free to establish speed limits based on safety standards, not just fuel economy. States in the overpopulated and traffic-choked Northeast set a fairly conservative limit of 65 mph on interstate highways, while less population-dense Western states gave drivers a bit more free reign.

Montana, for example, initially set their interstate speed limit at “reasonable and prudent.” This turned out to be a bad great idea, since the definition of “reasonable and prudent” varied greatly from driver to driver. Until it was changed back to 75 mph on interstate highways, Montana probably had more tourists driving Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Corvettes than any other state in the nation.

Today, Utah and portions of Texas have the highest interstate speed limits, capped at 80 mph. That will soon change, since Texas just approved a new maximum speed limit of 85 miles per hour. It’s not all good news, however, since the new speed limit doesn’t go into effect right away and will only apply to certain (desolate) portions of interstate highway in the Lone Star State.

The first step before Texas becomes the new Montana is a review of interstate highways, to determine which ones can have speed limits raised from 70 to 75 mph. Only after this is finished will the state review highways for an increase from 80 to 85 mph, and chances are good that only stretches of Interstate 10 in West Texas will get the nod.  The review, and the resulting changes, must be posted by 2013.

Lamborghini Navarra Concept Study

Lamborghini Navarra Concept Study

A few days ago we got the pleasure of seeing a cool Lamborghini concept called the Cnossusthat was designed by a couple of students with the permission of the company themselves. Today we got to see another cool Lamborghini concept study. The Lamborghini Navarra is the work of an American by the name of Adam Denning who is a designer for Lockheed Martin USA.

Lamborghini Navarra Concept Study 5

His car was created as a successor for the current Murcielago model: “I tried to imagine all the V12 flagships of the brand from the Miura to the Murcielago, and then create a car that would look like it not only belonged in this group, but that it was the result of these cars as well. I was very inspired by Michelangelo’s La PietĂ . The way Mary’s garments flow down and fold over each other was the main inspiration for the Navarra’s overlapping surfaces and organic shapes.

Denning, who has a masters in Automotive Design from the Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan, Italy, says the Navarra will use a carbon-fiber frame and carbon-fiber panels. The power behind the concept would be a powerful V12 engine producing between 650 and 700 bhp.

Lamborghini Minotauro Concept

Lamborghini Minotauro ConceptThe name Andrei Avarvarii started to become more and more recognized, the concept that you see here was made from zero by him. He didn’t do that only from passion, he was coordinated by the head of design of the Italian brand. As I said, this Lamborghini Minotauro wasn’t made from ambition, it was the final project from MA in Scuola Politehnica di Design from Milano.

This project took place under the supervision of Filippo Perini, the head of design from Lamborghini and it represents a possible future electric vehicle. From the motorization point of view this Minotauro drops the huge V12 and in its place it has four electric engines, two on the front size developing 75 horsepower and other two in the back side developing 175 horsepower.

Those two front engines provide 30% power to the front wheels. The total amount of power is 507 horsepower, which is pretty decent for a future supercar. About the exterior what can I say, the characteristic word is “future” and I appreciate the fact that they kept the Lamborghini character, if you look from the front side you will see what I mean
